Wilma Doreen West 1924 - 2009

Wilma Doreen West was born June 4, 1924 in Lucky Lake, Saskatchewan, the seventh child of Cyrus and Pauline Wood.  She was deceased on July 8, 2009 in Dawson Creek, B.C. at the age of 85.

Early in life while still living in Lucky Lake Wilma met the love of her life, Lloyd West.  She married Lloyd when she was sixteen and after he was discharged from the Armed Services they moved to Dawson Creek in 1945.  About 1950 Wilma started a ‘Boarding House’.  She was an excellent cook and provided not just a clean bed and good food but a home for many young men, bankers, office clerks and RCMP, who were away from their families and home.  Lloyd and her family had grown to six children and with six boarders the West home was a busy place.  Times of playing bridge, Sunday picnics along with lots of family interaction made the West boarding home a special place to live.  It was during this time she was affectionately referred to as ‘Ma West’ and some lifelong friendships were enjoyed, one in particular being Johnny Anderson who wrote and delivered Wilma’s eulogy.

On July 26, 1972 tragedy struck and Wilma lost her beloved Lloyd.  This left a huge void in Wilma’s life but she struggled on and completed the raising of her family but it wasn’t long before she had an empty nest.  The family soon spread out around the country, building their own lives and families but all came home when possible.

Wilma was a good friend and one that always made you feel welcome in her home.  After Lloyd passed away and the children left home Wilma’s time was enjoyed with the company of many good friends.

Too soon Wilma began to lose her memory and this advanced very quickly. This was a frustration for Wilma and hard on her family and friends. Expressions of sympathy may be made in memory of Wilma to the ‘Alzheimer Society of British Columbia’ 9005 Lyman Drive, Dawson Creek, BC V1G3N1.

Wilma was predeceased by: her husband Lloyd; parents Cyrus and Pauline Wood; sisters Ruth, Mary, Glenys and Grace; and brothers Woody, Wilfred, Ken, Cyrus and Les.

Wilma leaves to mourn – her brothers Russ and Bill and all of her children: Margaret and Ken Bernath, their 3 children and 5 grand children; Harry and Vicky West, their 3 children, 6 grandchildren, and 1 great-grandchild; Lou Austgarden, her 3 children and 5 grandchildren; Alvin West, his 2 children and 5 grandchildren; Calvin and Jane West, their 2 children and 9 grandchildren;  Brian and Melanie West, their 4 children and 3 grandchildren;   Also many nephews and nieces.

A memorial service was held for Wilma on Thursday, July 16, 2009 with Pastor Gordon Warriner officiating.  Wilma’s urn was interred in her husband Lloyd’s grave in the Dawson Creek City Cemetery, Dawson Creek, British Columbia.

Memorial arrangements were entrusted to Bergeron Funeral Services & Crematorium Ltd. Dawson Creek, British Columbia.
