Victoria Marzan Jones (1955-2009)

Victoria Marzan Jones was born in Nagilian La Union, Philippines. Most commonly known as Vicky, she was the 4th out of 7 children. In grade four, she moved to the capital of the country, Manila. After graduating high school in 1970, she took her two year pre-nursing course in the Baguio city college. All she had left to do was her practicum but with four children all in college, the tuition of each sibling became expensive. To help out her parents, Vicky postponed her studies so that her younger sibling could finish their courses.

Vicky always kept her parents in her prayers. She had seen how hard they worked on the farm. Vicky wanted her parents to relax, travel and retire one day. Once she found a job in the shoe market as a manager, she sent home a good portion of her salary.

Eager to start a new career, Vicky applied in several countries to work abroad. After one year, she received a visa with her name on it. Vicky was to work in a furniture shop in Barren next to Saudi Arabia.

When she returned to the Philippines, Vicky was surprised to see that her parents used the money she gave them to build a new floor and roof to their house. At the age of 31, she applied to work in Brunei on the Island of Borneo in Malaysia. Vicky’s resume was accepted and she spent another three years working as a Cashier Manager in a department store. This is where she had met our dad, Victor Jones.

They got married on March 8th 1990 in the Philippines. A year later, Vicky gave birth to her daughter, Nathalie Jones. In 1993, she became a Canadian citizen. In 1995 shegave birthtoher son, Jordan Jones.

Vicky’s height sure did not measure up to her outgoing personality. She always reminded her family, even though they were taller than she was, she was still the boss. Vicky was a very clean person and everything was always in order. At meal times, she was the last to sit down. Everyone had to be enjoying her food.  Vicky would interrogate every boy that showed up at our house looking for her daughter. If any girls came to her home looking for her son, Vicky would feed them.

In 2004 Vicky was diagnosed with breast cancer and was scheduled to undergo surgery. About a week after her Mastectomy and Lumpectomy she was back cooking supper for the entire family! After her treatments Vicky was cancer free for one year. On her 51st birthday, she was diagnosed with a cancerous brain tumor. She had one open surgery and two laser surgeries on her brain. Despite her efforts, the cancer insisted on coming back.

Victoria believed that God will not put you through anything you could not handle. On March 1st, God made his decision. Even though Vicky will be missed by all, she is no longer suffering by Gods help.

A funeral service was held on March 7, 2009 at the Notre Dame Roman Catholic Church, Dawson Creek, British Columbia, officiated by Father Michael Anyasoro.  Interment followed in the Brookside Cemetery.
