Vernon “Shorty” Moll 1914-2008
Vernon Moll was born August 8, 1914 in Raub, North Dakota. His big brother Elmer soon labeled him Shorty and it stuck for life. On October 31, 1931 he arrived in Dawson Creek, part of the Jake Moll family which consisted of dad Jake, brother Elmer and four sisters Louis, Alice Vera and the baby Phoebe. Shorty was the last surviving member of the family.
The depression was a time of shortage of material things but there were card parties and dances in the community and swimming at the river in the summer. Lots of berry picking and hunting to make ends meet. Trapping in the winter added to the family’s income. Both Shorty and his brother Elmer played on the Progress baseball team.
During the 1940’s Elmer and Shorty started sawmilling every winter and returned to the farm during the summer. They had their sawmill for over twenty years. Then they turned to farming full time, raising cattle and doing a little grain farming. A stroke in 1998 put a stop to his active farming but he managed to stay at home on the farm until just three days before his death.
Where Uncle Elmer had been the mother hem to all the nieces and nephews; Uncle Shorty was the mischief maker, always playing tricks or instigating something. This usually ended with him getting heck as well as us kids. His sisters always said that he was the biggest kid of all.
Shorty was predeceased by his parents, brother Elmer and sisters: Louise, Alice, Vera and Phoebe; brothers in-law: Melvin McQueen, Art Fraser and Joe Defries; two nephews: Gary and Kelly Fraser; great-niece Heather Brown; great-great-nephews: Randy Studley, Travis Paradowski and Gregory Moat.
Shorty is survived by his brother in-law Norman Densen, nephews: Harold McQueen, Lenard McQueen, Don McQueen, Joe Defries and Gene Defries; nieces: Gayle Huff, Joyce Studley, Gloria Wetherill, Francis Turner, Valerie McMurray and Sally Howard; and numerous great-nieces and nephews and many friends.
Now their family circle is unbroken over yonder.
A graveside service was held on July 8, 2008 at the Dawson Creek City Cemetery, officiated by Peggy Bergeron.
