Martha Howatt 1915 - 2009
Martha was born on July 5, 1915 in Burstall, Saskatchewan to August Graf and Christina Dorr. Her parents were both born in Russia. There were 10 children, Martha being the 6th. They resided in Burstall, Saskatchewan. The family then moved to Two Rivers (Halcourt area). In 1935 she married Robert Howatt and took up homesteading in the Elmworth area. In 1936 Ron was born, Delbert in 1942, Terry in 1945 and Raymond in 1950. She was a very industrious person in her sewing, gardening, crocheting, tending the animals, berry picking, canning and cooking for her children and grandchildren. As the boys grew older she cooked for threshing crews to supply them with books and clothes for school. When Raymond turned 12, Martha and Bob cooked in many logging camps for the winters. This enabled them to build a new home in 1968. They worked with many friends and relatives.
Robert passed away in 1978. In 1980 Martha married Lionel Pinard and moved to Dawson Creek. He was instrumental in getting her to travel on bus tours, cruises and even RVing. She continued to garden and took in many seniors dances and Friday nights supper at the Co-op. Lionel passed away in 1990.
At the age of 88 she needed a heart valve replacement and pacemaker; she questioned the doctor as to why she could not have the pig’s valve, which was given to younger patients as opposed to the plastic valves given to older patients. She was the ‘Energizer Bunny’. Her accomplishments included getting her drivers license at 65. Some family members will remember that was the fastest in and out of a ditch while she was attempting to pick up magnetic flashlight on the passenger side floor which had fallen from the dash. She enjoyed the boy’s trapper cabin, back to basics sort of, short of the Eaton’s or Sear’s catalogues.
She loved to watch TV game shows and the Nashville music programs. She was independent and still living in her own home until she took sick a month ago. Special mention goes to Bob and Betty Hawkin’s for all they have done, Thank you very much.
Martha was predeceased by her son Ronald Howatt, husband Robert Howatt, granddaughter Sherri Lynn Howatt and husband Lionel Pinard.
Martha was survived by her sons: Delbert (Ann) Howatt, Terry (Louise) Howatt and Ray (Merwa) Howatt; grandchildren: Rene (Christina) Howatt, Steven Howatt, Brenda (Ray) Ensz, Allen (Jody) Howatt, Ken (Stacy) Howatt, Emily Howatt, Ryan Howatt, Ken (Darcy) Howatt and Deanna (Daryl) Friesen; 20 great-grandchildren; and sisters: Minnie Martinell and Annie McGee.
