Kevin Vankoughnett 1956-2008
Kevin Edward Vankoughnett was the 5th child born to Vern and Marion on October 31, 1956 in Kingston, Ontario. He was mischievous, curious and full of energy, always the life of the party but also the watch dog, keeping close watch on everyone to make sure nothing would get too out of hand.
The family moved to Vedder Crossing, British Columbia when Kevin was 12 and then to Chilliwack at 15 where he joined Cadets. It was around this time when he started logging with his father, uncle and brother.
In 1974 is when he finally moved to and settled in Dawson Creek. He worked at various jobs including Tremblay Sand and Gravel, Astro Paving, and then found a calling in the tire business where he dedicated 20 years of his life finding himself at Wal-Mart as an Automotive Technician.
A new chapter unfolded in Kevin’s life when he met and married Darlene Dumais, his lifelong companion. He was blessed not only with a wonderful and loving wife but also 2 daughters (Leanne and Angela) and twin boys (Desmond and Darcey). He accepted fatherhood with on open heart and mind.
Kevin was an avid sportsman, playing on Men’s and Mixed League Slow-Pitch teams, broomball for Ro-Mac Renegades, the Tupper Timberjacks and Tom’s Lake Pioneers, who nicknamed him Trapper. He was also involved with the Dawson Creek Dart Club, and in the most recent years played in the Pouce Coupe Legion Dart Club. And if that didn’t keep him busy enough, he also enjoyed bowling on occasions.
He loved the outdoors. He loved to camp, fish and especially hunt. Hunting was his passion, all the great stories and friends that he made were a part of his legacy.
Kevin would provide support when required or lend a hand when needed, from fixing things that were broken or staying up all night with a sick grandchild to make them more comfortable. He expressed his love and appreciation by helping with a problem or providing such support. He was not a man of many words but had a big heart. He is a testament of how one person can touch so many other people in a positive way.
Kevin was a very friendly sociable person. He enjoyed the company of family, friends, co-workers and people he met through his sports activities. Anyone who knew him was touched by his compassion is some way, shape or form.
Kevin is survived by his wife Darlene Vankoughnett, children: Leeann (Gary) Girard, Angela (Iven) Davidson, Desmond (Toni) Dumais and Darcey Dumais; grandchildren: Adrien, Quinton, Brenden, Kayden, Taryn, Lyric, Rhaynel, Ayla, Lilly and Nahneya, parents Marion and Vern Vankoughnett, mother in-law Vivian Dumais; siblings: Sandra (Ross) Francis, Keith (Donna) Vankoughnett, Gail (Dave) McRoberts, Doris (Dave) Goulet, Sylvia (Reg) Oman, Terry Vankoughnett and Hubert (Charlene) Vankoughnett.
A funeral service was held on September 12, 2008 at the Bergeron Funeral Chapel, Dawson Creek, British Columbia, officiated by Reverend Marilyn Carroll. Interment was held in the Brookside Cemetery.
