Hazel Moffit 1925 - 2009

Hazel was born in November of 1925 in Manitoba. She spent the first 16 years of her life in Poplar Point near Portage La Prairie. She was born the last of 7 children to her parents Wes and Jane Lang. She loved farm life and was a self proclaimed ‘tom boy” who always preferred jack knives, horses, and baseball to dolls and pretty dresses. Hazel left home at age 16 to assist with the War effort and soon got a job with John Inglis making parts for the Bren gun. Following the War, Hazel loaded up and headed to Chilliwack. In 1948 she married Sherwood Moffit and had 2 children Wendy and Lindsay. Sherwood was a pilot and they would move an additional 14 times during her life spending time in Chilliwack, Fort St John and Dawson Creek.

Hazel loved sports and spent most of her life playing baseball, golfing and curling. She even tried a few bowling teams but found them too “boring.” Curling was her all-time favorite sport.   She curled competitively from the time her children were small until her health would no longer allow. She then became the best armchair curler around following all of the games, and organizing schedules for everyone in Spruceland Manor.   Everyone knew, not to visit or call while curling was on.

From her early days at dances in Manitoba to well into her senior years, Hazel loved music and dance. Once settled into Dawson Creek she quickly became part of the Line Dance craze and joined the Groovin’ Grannies. Hazel loved to hear live music, especially the guitar and more recently she was thrilled to have the Sewell’s playing in the apartment so she could easily enjoy live music.  When you would phone Hazel’s house, you would always hear her humming and singing in the background.

Hazel was a big believer that she could do anything she set her mind to, and did not take kindly to anyone who may try and tell her differently. In her 70’s, she decided to get her pilot’s license. Hazel and friend Bernice Ashlee, studied, practiced, even cheated a bit but they finished! Bernice officially had her license and Hazel was an unlicensed but experienced co-pilot when they decided to fly to Ft Nelson. They arrived without incident but did later admit their navigation skills were weak so they just followed the highway! This was a huge accomplishment for Hazel and something she was very proud of.

Hazel loved a good joke; she loved to laugh and treasured all the time she spent with wonderful friends. She was generous with her friends and family…but brutally honest as well. Granddaughter Deanna says Grandma would give you the shirt off her back without question…but also wouldn’t hesitate to tell you exactly how it looked on you. If Hazel had an opinion, you rarely had to ask, she would freely offer it up and she didn’t believe in sugar coating. You never had to guess where you stood with her.

Hazel was so happy to have lived long enough to see Deanna marry and have a daughter of her own. Great granddaughter Rebecca has been a source of great joy. Rebecca adored her and always ran down the hall with a big hug. Hazel loved to play, tell her stories and get her all “riled up!”

Hazel lived her life full speed ahead with adventure and joy. We believe she would want to be remembered for her friendship, her sense of humor and spirit and for the fact that she often took the path less travelled.

Hazel passed away in Dawson Creek on July 12th at age 83. She is survived by one sister Ruth Belinski, children Wendy Schuller and Lindsay Moffit. Granddaughter Deanna Sudnik (Mike) and Great Granddaughter Rebecca Sudnik. As well as numerous nieces and nephews.

A Memorial service was held on Saturday, July 18 2009 at 11:00 am at the Bergeron Funeral Chapel, Dawson Creek, B.C..
