Gordon Miller  1928-2008

Gordon Miller was born on March 31, 1928 and died July 14, 2008.   His parents were Ben and Dorothy Miller of the Lakeview District.  Gordon had one older brother, Kenneth.   His father, Ben Miller, helped organize the Lakeview Credit Union and his share number was “1”.

Gordon’s first job was with the Toronto Dominion Bank in Dawson Creek.  He later took banking jobs in Edmonton and Kyle, Saskatchewan.  He also worked for Northern Freightways as a freight shipper,  MacNamara Hislop,  Fort St John Lumber, and Rempel Trail Transport.

On Sept. 5, 1953 Gordon was married to Shirley Mitchell from Blueberry Mountain, Alberta.  They had two children, Margaret and Don.   Their first home  (14 x 28) on the farm was built by Gordon, where they lived for 7 years.  It was a busy time for them with the raising of crops and some cattle.  Farming was just a sideline as Gordon continued working at various jobs. The children remember many camping and fishing trips.  Of course, it was not such modern mode of travel in those days, mostly with a tent or an old camper on the truck.

Some fond memories of childhood remembered by Margaret and Don are:

Gordon pulling us on the sleigh and then asking them to pull him on the sleigh.

Gordon supported both of them in their 4-H projects and took time out to drive them to all the 4-H events.  In later life the family enjoyed trips to Don’s cabin near Prince George.  Gordon thought Don had the life of luxury with week-ends off to leisurely fish on the lake as he recalled nothing but work on his week-ends.

In 1961 the family moved to Dawson Creek and once again Gordon got to build another house.  This remained the family home.

Travelling was something Gordon and Shirley enjoyed.  They made trips to England and other destinations in 1977 and in 1987.  This was wonderful for both of them as they got a chance to visit family overseas.

Another passion for Gordon was fishing.   In Nanaimo he caught the BIG one, a Salmon.   You should have seen his smile!

Gordon was largely involved with the Dawson Creek Co-op holding positions of President and Director.   Until just recently he enjoyed his weekly meal and visit to the Co-op.

Gordon retired in 1988 from B.C. Ministry of Agriculture with 15 years of service in the Crop Insurance Branch.  He had 20 years of retirement and during this time the Millers did more traveling, and he also took up painting with the Seniors Group in Dawson Creek.

In 1991 he organized the Peace River B.C. Government Retired Employees’ Assoc. and held the position of President for 5 years.   In earlier years he was instrumental in getting the Society for Community Living started in Dawson Creek.  He held the position of President for two years.

His final years were spent at Rotary Manor.  The people at Rotary became his extended family.  Gordon lived a full life and seldom complained.

A funeral service was held on July 17, 2008 in the Bergeron Funeral Chapel, Dawson Creek, officiated by Captains Francie and Roger Lee.  Interment followed in the Brookside Cemetery, Dawson Creek, British Columbia.
