Ethel Mohr 1922 – 2009

It is will great sadness that we announce the passing of Ethel Mohr at the age of 87.  She will be deeply missed by her family and friends.

Ethel was born on June 8th, 1922, on the family farm near Tees, Alberta. She was the second of eight children born to Howard and Jeannie Prier.  There she spent the first ten years of her life on the family farm in this small community just east of Edmonton.  From Tees they moved to Valhalla where she attended school.  From Valhalla, the Prier family moved to their homestead just outside of Rolla.

Then came the day she left the farm with a paper bag filled with the few clothes she had and moved into a rooming house with her sister Jean and never looked back.  She had a job the very next day.   She was working as a waitress in Wing’s Café when, in 1942, she met her first husband Art Mohr whom she married in 1944 in Wembley.  They then moved to Cranbrook, where Dennis was born in the old Invermere Hospital.  After Denny was born, Art and Ethel returned to Dawson Creek where Phyllis was born two years later.  Ethel and Art were married for 25 years.  Ethel then moved to Fort St. John where she met Bill Hynne who was her partner in life for the next 32 years.  The really enjoyed traveling with their Fifth Wheel Trailer every spring.  After Bill passed in 2006, life was never quite the same.  She missed Bill very much.

Two years before Bill had passed, they had adopted a small puppy which became the center of their life.  This loving little bundle of fur helped to fill the void that Bill had left behind and what a blessing she was to Ethel’s last few years.

Ethel was very active and loved to spend time outside working on her yard in the summer and shoveling snow in her driveway in the winter.  At 87 years old, she still did it all!  Her motto was “If I don’t use it, I will lose it”.  She never did lose it.   People would compliment her on her yard and driveway and she would enjoy telling them just how old she really was.

Ethel passed peacefully in her sleep on the morning of June 30th, 2009, leaving her family and friends with many wonderful memories of a life well lived.  She leaves behind her two children Dennis (Louise)  and Phyllis (Paul);  six grandchildren, Clint (Maureen), Cindy (Brian), Danny (Sherry), Shawna (Darin), Brad, and Josh, five great grandchildren, Dylan, Hayden, Brittany, Gabrielle, and Jackson; brother Howard (Frances); sisters Gertie, Lilly (Jim) and Jean.  She is predeceased by her mom and dad Howard and Jeannie Prier; her two brothers Alvin and Ed; and her sister Sarah.

A memorial service for Ethel was held at the Rolla Community Hall, Rolla British Columbia on July 8th, 2009, officiated by Peggy Bergeron.  The cremated remains of Ethel were interred in the grave of her husband Bill Hynne in the Rolla Community Cemetery.   Expressions of sympathy may be made in memory of Ethel to The North Peace SPCA.

Memorial arrangements entrusted to Bergeron Funeral Services & Crematorium Ltd. Dawson Creek, British Columbia.
