Charlie Swift 1923-2008

Charles David Swift was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on May 27, 1923 to Charles and Bessie Swift.  Charlie spent his early years on the family farm, attending school and making many lifelong friends,

As a young man, Charlie, who was not afraid of hard work, had various jobs such as farming, hauling freight with a team of horses and managing a country store for his brother Jim.

In 1945 Charlie met his future bride.  After a two year courtship, Charlie and Frances were married on November 6, 1947.  In 1950 Frances gave birth to their son, Wayne, and the family was complete.

In 1954 Charles decided to move his family to Dawson Creek, where a childhood friend, Warren Nelson lived.  He found work immediately as a roofer and was very busy due to the fact that a major hailstorm had just hit the area.

When the air base was set up in Dawson Creek, Charlie was hired on as a boiler man.  He not only worked at the base, but was also sent by helicopter to a number of outlying sites.  He enjoyed the camaraderie shared with fellow employees and would often tell stories of “the air base days”.

Upon the closure of the air base, Charlie got a job at the local curling rink and arena as ice maker, where he made many more friends, as well as GREAT ICE.

Finally Charlie hung up his shingle and retired to his home of many years in the Tremblay subdivision.  He enjoyed tending his garden and yard until his legs would no longer cooperate.  One of his greatest pleasures came from playing crib with friends and family.

Charlie was a lifetime member of the Dawson Creek Curling Club and of the Elks, and a Legion member for many years.

Charlie will be sadly missed by his family and many friends but will be remembered by all for his love of life, his total commitment to his family, his dedicated work ethic and his wonderful sense of humor, as well as his amazing crib playing skills!

Charlie is predeceased by his parents Bessie and Charles Swift, sister Hilda Herbert and brother Don Swift.  He is survived by his wife Frances, son Wayne (Ardith) Swift, and brother Jim (Ruby) Swift.

A Funeral service was held on September 18, 2008 at the Bergeron Funeral Chapel, Dawson Creek, British Columbia, officiated by Peggy Bergeron.  Interment followed in the Brookside Cemetery
