Alexander Charles Shields
Known by many as Sandy
Alexander Charles Shields was born in Regina, Saskatchewan on May 23, 1941 and moved to Toronto, Ontario with his family at age 4. When Sandy was in Grade school he had his own paper route and when he was in high school he enjoyed playing hockey.
While working at Cominico Mine in Kimberly, B.C., he took his apprenticeship training and became a heavy duty mining mechanic. Later he moved to Tumbler Ridge to work for Quintette Coal where he met Carmella.
Sandy really enjoyed camping, fishing, hunting and the great outdoors. He enjoyed Nascar Racing which he shared with his friend Ray and his brothers in-law.
Sandy had a real dry sense of humor, one time Carmella said she was going to run to the store and sandy looked at her and said ”Why not take the car, it’s a long way to run”.
He was a gentle and soft spoken man and would go out of his way to help anyone who needed it.
In later years Sandy enjoyed doing carpentry work. There are many people who owe their decks, sheds and additions to Sandy and his hammer. For example Randy Thompson, Sharon Walkington, Loreen and Vivian Bentrued , Loretta and many more.
I’m sure that each of them has stories they could tell of Sandy and his antics, while doing the work. It is said that he would build a shed for someone and he would leave the last nail for someone else to hammer in just so he could hear the owner say, ‘Sandy you always start something but never finish it, Right Randy.
He said every summer that people would flock to him, I said “waddya mean?”, “yes” he said “they love the Sandy Beach”. So I would always call him Sandy Beach.
Sandy will be fondly remembered and missed by his wife Carmella, children Andria and Morgan, grandchildren Justin, Andrew, Charlie and Leah. He will be sorely missed by all his many friends and those whose lives he touched.
A memorial service was held on November 15, 2008 at the Bergeron Funeral Chapel, officiated by Peggy Bergeron.
